How the menstrual cup has changed my life

Posted on March 5, 2023March 9, 2023 by June Congo

If you told me two and a half years ago that period poverty is not necessarily a thing for the “poor people living in the dry savannahs in Kenya , I would have totally dismissed you .

It’s period ‘poverty’! ‘Poverty’!

A thing for the ‘poor’ people. Poor people are those ones who can only afford if at all , one meal in a day , right?

Wrong!

My first menstrual cup was a gift from a giveaway that ‘The Grace Cup Kenya’ ran on their YouTube page a few years ago. ( God bless you Ebby )

I was not in any form of income generating business or employment at that point in my life and was down to my last coin, literally and figuratively. Up until then all I thought was necessary for any woman or man to survive was ‘ food to eat and a place to lay their head on ‘.

Now, ladies, if you have never had to worry or think even in the least bit about what products you will use to manage your next menstrual period, and not in the spoilt-for-choice kind of way, no. In the zero kind of choices way. Count yourself lucky. Very very lucky!

For the first time in my life , I understood first hand how disadvantaged girls and women would resort to exchanging sexual favors just to get their hands on sanitary products. With the topic of menstruation still being a largely taboo topic in Kenya, you can only imagine how disheartening the whole situation was for me and possibly is for all the girls and women who have found themselves between a rock and a hard place because of something our bodies does naturally.

Periods have almost been demonized and presented to us as a process so unclean that we even have communities where women are not allowed to do certain things when they are on their menstrual periods.

A huge percentage of women up to date cannot even fathom looking at or even touching their own menstrual blood .

Anyway , let me save you all that for now and let you in on the next best thing after the internet.
